How to Do Vancouver Style Referencing?

Vancouver is a referencing style commonly used in science and medicine and consist of two parts:



  • In-text Citation- Whenever you quotes or paraphrase someone’s work in your text.
  • End-Text Referencing- The complete details of the in citation text is given at the end of the text in the reference list.

Vancouver Referencing For Research Papers/Journals:

Whenever you cite a research in your paper, your Vancouver reference style should follow the following format:

In-text Citation:

  • Unlike APA style referencing where author name is used in the text, Vancouver uses numbers in EITHER square bracket [ ], curved bracket ( ) or as superscripts 1, 2, 3
  • Same number will be used for each of the source used.

Examples:

  • According to a study, frequent use of amoxicillin lead to bacterial resistance [1].
  • According to a study, frequent use of amoxicillin lead to bacterial resistance (1).
  • According to a study, frequent use of amoxicillin lead to bacterial resistance 1

References: All the sources are listed under the reference section. Each citation numbered above is detailed under the reference section in the following way:

  • Author’s Name:

NUMBER OF AUTHORS INSTRUCTION EXAMPLE
One author Surname followed by 2 initials. Shelton DB
2-6 authors List the names of all authors. Hallar AH, Amorgui JD, Jeremiah IM, Casillas J, Schulman CI, Manning RJ
6 or more Name of 1st 6 authors, then add ‘et-al’ Hallar AH, Amorgui JD, Jeremiah IM, Casillas J, Schulman CI, Manning RJ, et al.

  • Article Name: use only 1st sentence of the title.
  • Journal Title: Journal titles are abbreviated or used in short forms.
  • Date: With the format YY:MM:DD
  • Volume Number and pages

All the above components are combined with the citation number under the following format:


Format:
Number of citation. Author AA, Author BB. Title of article. Abbreviated title of Journal [Internet]. Date of publication YYYY MM [cited YYYY Mon DD];volume number(issue number):page numbers

Vancouver Referencing For Books:

Book referencing is almost same as journal or article referencing but has few added components as explained below:

  • In-text citation- In-text citation remains same for all sources whether it is article, book, encyclopedia or any other source.
  • References: Is a bit different as illustrated as follow:


The components of book reference include following:

  • 1Author’s Name -Same as for journals and articles.
  • Book Name
  • Edition- No need of mentioning if its 1st edition.
  • Place of Publication
  • Name of Publisher
  • Year of publication
  • Paging

As combined under the following format:


Format:
Author AA. Title of book. Number of Edition. Place of Publication: Publisher; Year of publication. Paging.

Vancouver Referencing For Dictionaries and Encyclopedia:

  • In-text Citation- Same as research and book citation.
  • Reference: See the following illustration for referencing the dictionary and encyclopedia.


References consist of the following elements:

  • Title of encyclopedia
  • Place of Publication
  • Publisher
  • Year of Publication
  • Title of the article
  • Updated date (given in encyclopedia)
  • Citation date (given)
  • Number of pages or screen
  • Available from (URL)

Format:
Title of encyclopedia. Place of publication: Name of Publisher; year. Title of article; [updated YYYY Mon DD; cited YYYY Mon DD]; [# of pages or screens]. Available from: URL
